Power outages are a big problem, especially in less developed countries. Make sure your electronics are safe. In this article we will dive into how what the dangers of power cuts or spikes are and how to prevent damage.
What caused me to write this article
I live in India, our power lines are somewhat unreliable. I recently built myself an expensive desktop computer, coming from a laptop it didn’t immediately occur to me that not having a battery would be a problem. But, it suddenly hit me, what if there is a surge and it damages my investment, or the power cuts and I lose my work… Well, I decided to get myself a UPS, which stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply and instantly plugged my PC into it upon delivery. It was a good call, 3 days later, my power suddenly cut for a few minutes and my work was safe. Caution shouldn’t hurt.
In our office we once had a power surge that cause damage to a hard drive and we almost lost 2 TB of important data, if we didn't have a backup. It could have been much worse, the PC internal power supply could have exploded and caused a fire when no one was looking...

Before you rush out to buy one
Depending on your workload, you may need a UPS of varying capacity. I learned that the hard way by buying a low wattage power supply. When working on my code, the PC barely uses 80 watts of power, but the thing is I game, consequently, I have a graphics card that can pull around 150 watts on its own. Upon the combination of gaming and power outage, my computer shut down and the UPS overloaded, my PC was undamaged, but it is still very stressful.
Selecting the right capacity
What you want to know is the maximum amount of power your electronics will use, a PS5 uses 350 watts of power, my gaming workstation (Ryzen 9 7900 / RX 7600) can use around 400 under load. Make sure you get a capacity 25% above maximum load. I can’t stress this enough, for the longevity of both the power supply and electronics, you should not put pressure on the hardware.
Thanks for reading, I hope I made you aware of the dangers that power outages can cause to your hardware.
